As far as your question, the first thing you have to ask yourself is, what size bike can I handle. This is important, you don't want to get out on a bike too heavy in traffic and get yourself hurt or worse. CC's being the size of the motor is one thing, but a smaller cc motor can be more powerful.
Just decide what bike you want whether it be a crotch rocket or a V twin cruiser. Next decide for what use, ie. transportation to work only or do you want it for weekend fun. Then go find a bike you decided on and shop for price. When you find the bike you feel one with, can get your feet flat on the ground, buy it and have some fun.

Most displacement @ 2294 cc would have to be the Triumph Rocket III $17000 140 Bhp @ 6000 and 137 ftlbs @ 2500 http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/newsandupdates/122_0609_2007_triumphs_released/rocket_3.html

Fastest would have to be the Suzuki Hayabusa $12000 @ a claimed 200+ mph, 212 Bhp and 147 ftlb. http://www.suzukicycles.com/Products/GSX1300RK7/Default.aspx

Good compromise would be the BMW K1200S $16000 168 Bhp @ 10250rpm and 96 ftlb @ 8250, comes with electronic suspension (like their cars) and antilock brakes. http://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/bikes/bike.jsp?b=k1200s

I have ridden each of these bikes. The Rocket is really big and heavy. The Hayabusa will just scare the h*ll out of you. The K1200S is awesome.

Or you can go with:

A pseudo Harley-Davidson, the V-rods. These are not actually Harleys, the motors were designed and built in Germany and most of the other parts came from various part of the World. I think that they may be assembled in the US just to keep up appearances. I threw these in because they are the only Harleys (that includes the Beulls) that even come close to the Rocket but are still not anywhere near the Beemer or Suzuki in performance or warranty. http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/2007_Motorcycles/2007_Motorcycles.jsp?locale=en_US&cwpws/dwp/cont-without-flash=true&swfdwp=&dwp_dealerid=&dwp_pg=&cwpws/dwp/dwp-dealer-id=

if your not a ***** you ll be looking for a cruiser right?
i can only assume... if harDley was on your list at all you wouldn't ask this so they are out. the new Polaris has the nice 100cid twin and a six speed, speedo only hits 120mph so you ll be guessing your speed above that, better than that is the Honda VTX 1800 it comes in five fun flavors, i like the F, VTX1800 the way to go, if you can handle a 800 lb bike that is.

only buy a harley if you have more money than brains, dont want to be fast, and like being passed by other bikers.

if harley davidson build a jet i sure as hell wouldnt put my life on it.
honda actually does make jets. that should make everything clear.

air cooled, or water cooled? harley's are air cooled except v-rods. metrics are water cooled. a 750cc water cooled engine will lay down impressive power for its size. if this is ur first bike, for the price, and power to weight ratio in the cruiser category, i'd go with the honda aero. 750cc's, rides very smooth.
a crotch rocket will kill u quick. their not newbie forgiving. they're for experienced riders.
