as has been mentioned, depends on the woman. But most of the ones I've been around for more than a few nights were delicate and vulnerable in some ways, and hard as flint in others. Women are like everything else one comes across in the world - whenever you get something you give something up. If one is attracted to smart, headstong women, don't expect them to roll over and let you be in charge of everything. If you go for a weak, submissive, pushover, don't go whining to your buddies when you lose respect for her and she bores you nearly to death.
I would describe all that I ended up having serious feelings for as beautiful, even though not all of them would have been described at first glance by most impartial male observers as such. They become beautiful because of what you feel for them, even if they wouldn't always and in every way, stand up favorably to the cruel objectification and ruthless analysis that the media uses to determine it. There's an old saying to the effect that: "If you are the only naked woman in the room, you're a million bucks." It's true. For men anyway.
Who cares if she has a few dimples on a slightly too wide backside? A post-partem stretch mark or two on her boobs? What is that compared to her being smart and fun and a wonderful companion, confidant and partner?
Men that want their women to look 18 forever, that don't expect them to be altered, and in my mind, improved, by the experiences, and yes, even ravages of life, are 18 in the head, and will likely be stuck there forever.
What things attract a man to a woman can be downright goofy at times, a guileless, self-conscious giggle, a look, an odd chemistry you can't put your finger on but you know if you see it, and be unable to think of much of anything besides her after you do.
What's unfortunate, at least in my case, is that very often the same things that make you fall hopelessly in love with a woman - and she with you, can make the relationship untenable in the long term. It's not true that opposites attract. They just tend to get along better in the long run.
The words I'd need to describe women as I see them would take up a lot more space than is sensible to use up here, and would bore people to death long before I reached anything resembling a point, so I'll just say that they are intoxicating, addictive (in a way that crack cocaine can't possibly hold a candle to), sometimes maddening and seemingly incomprehensible, that have, despite my and their wretched miscalculations and resultant losses, gave me the moments, days, weeks, even years, that made life worth living, and the pain, expense, and confusion that has come of the constant need and even compulsion to have one involved in my life as much and as often as possible has in no way negated the upside, and I have no intention of giving up on them now.
And, in fairness, a lot of what has gone on in my assorted love lives, defensible as it seemed at the time, hasn't stood up too well to analysis through a dispassionate and retrospective mind's eye. All in all, they've treated me better than I've treated them.
Live and learn and all that. Best we can do. Best I can do, anyway. Or did. Or am. Or something.

Someone to protect, cherish and hold hands with. A complimentary partner in all aspects of life. She is an analogy for beauty.
Edit - I felt the need to add this after reading some of the other posts. As I stated, a woman should be a complimentary partner...NOT a supplementary one. If you're both stubborn, for example, there will be trouble. Too often I see the relationship between a man and woman being viewed by them as a competition rather than a cooperative effort. The competitive relationship is a good example of a supplementary one, and will rarely last.

Obviously different women will be different things, to different people, at different times. But in the spirit of your question, I'd say that a woman is first and foremost, a work of art. I mean, just look at her form. Hey, there was a reason that Adam was pleased, ya know. A woman is also a mystery to be solved. She is enigmatic. Sometimes you have a pretty good idea about some things, but overall, a man's gonna be trying to figure this one out for a longgggg time.
But beyond that, it pretty much depends on the particular woman. My last gf for instance - she was like a wild tiger. Very sleek, muscular, strong and sexy, but oh man, did she have some sharp claws too. She could be very dangerous. And I mean that literally.
Really, there's just so much to be said for individual women, but I hope this maybe gave you what you were looking for.

Hmmm....good question. I think of women as individuals, mostly because I look at the potential of a partner in women. For that reason, I look for women to think independently of me, not necessarily in disagreement, but the ability to compliment and/or add to the way I look at life. I think there has to be a certain yin-yang quality in a woman - again, not in opposition but as a part of the whole.
