Please, you must be very youthful individuals or very dense people, because rabbits are very clean animals..That cage needs to be cleaned every 2-days at the very least!! It is basically animal abuse to leave it in an uncleaned cage.. I imagine that if that poor rabbit is being forced to stand on so much rabbit dung that it isn't being let out much either.. That is cruelty to the animal.. Rabbits are very social animals and crave attention. Just because they have not the voice you can "hear" (with human ears) doesn't mean they don't communicate, or need to. Just because they have a sort of rabbity stare doesn't mean they don't feel anything... Any animal on Earth thinks and feels and knows all the emotions you have ... Please get that rabbit a clean cage. That sounds like more than one week's worth of rabbit dung to me and that is cruelty. And for heaven's sakes PLAY with the rabbit.. They are highly social and need attention. If it is a solitary animal it will need you even more. Rabbits are herding animals and need company. How would you feel if you were left alone in a cage with no company?

This is just unreasonable. Your roommate should be responsible for his animals and maintain a sanitary living environment.
The smell is ammonia, and if the fumes make you uncomfortable, they're bad for you, but probably not measurably unhealthy. It's possible your immune system could be weakened, or if you have asthma, you could be more prone to tightness or an attack. I don't know toxic chemicals.
Maybe the apartment owner would back you up in forcing your roommate to get rid of the rabbit, since the odor could travel through the building.

That poor Rabbit. Your going to have to tell your room mate that he needs to take care of his rabbit or you will have to report him to the Animal Cruelty Society. As them if it is legal for you to give the rabbit to someone that can give it a better home. The amonia smell is from the pee. You can put a liquid called Bi-Odor Internal Waste and Urine Deodorizer from the company "Marshall" in the rabbits water everyday. I use it and you can't even smell her.

HE does not deserve to have this rabbit. the droppings are very good for gardens as fertilizer. he can take the rabbit to a pet store or humane society so it can get a good home. it cannot clean himself in the cooped up cage.tell your friend to keep the cage clean or you will turn him in for neglect of a helpless animal. How hard is it to clean a small rabbit cage? this is pure laziness and neglect and he is not a responsible animal owner and you shouldnt have to be breathing the stuff. If the cage is kept clean u wouldnt have this problem and everyone would be happy. let him read this

Ignore the above answer. It's good for the dog!! Rabbit poop can also be used as a fertilizer for your plants and it's also great for the rabbit to eat as they sometimes need to digest the food again - they can do this by eating their own poo.

The smell is ammonia from the urine. It's not toxic at those levels. It will do more harm to the bunny that you. That's definitely not healthy for the rabbit to have to sit in it. If it's in a pan collecting underneath it is halfway ok as long as the rabbit isn't sitting in it.

The ammonia is from the urine, not the poop. But who cares?
Rabbit poop is innocuous compared to people poop, but it's not nice to have a lot of it in the cage.

poor rabbit - this can be harmful to its lungs.. and the urine can burn the bottom of its paws..

if you care about the bunny you would clean the cage (cedar shavings are best)... or say you will help him do it.. or something

rabbit poop is THE BEST poop for gardens...
