Hip Hop has too narrow an audience. The moneymakers in the music business will give us absolutely anything if it has a narcotic appeal to a group of any age, any ethnicity, any religion, any culture or any stupid sexual orientation. All genre's die except the Great American Songbook which is latched onto by all the talents with the vocal chops as they move past their 40s. Interesting how the really good singers of today record one or more of the standards and young people latch onto it and think it is new. I believe Christina Aguilera's new album brings her some much needed class because with a voice like hers, she has to do it justice with songs with classy lyrics, soaring or soft melodies and a tune one can hum or sing after it has been played. The Great Singers from the 20s through the 60s have done it all but the potentially great singers of today deserve a crack at it. Watch young people run to see "Dreamgirls," a film filled with showstoppers and not even realize that they have just experienced a broadway musical transferred to film by great talents. Wait until they get a load of Eddie Murphy, Jaime Foxx, Beyonce and Jennifer Holliday (runner up on American Idol, of all things) belting out those songs. Holliday has three showstoppers topped by "And I'm Telling You.." Except for three or four new songs all the rest were written about 23 years ago. Unlike the Pop experience I do not think Hip Hop has really been alive except in a very narrow venue.

I don't think he will go platinum. At this time I don't think young people are interested in what he is trying to say. Also, where is the promotion. I do hope he goes platinum though. He is talented but can be boring at times.
And yes I think hip hop is dead unfortunately. Everyone's trying to make club songs now. Hopefully there will be a hip hop resurrection or something.

Nas is pretty much out of it. He's not really hot anymore, so I don't think he'll go platinum. Hip-hop is not dead. There are so many new hip-hop songs coming out almost every day.
