Freelance Writers?

Question

I love to write stories short and novels. Someone told me I should get into freelance writing. But I'm not sure how to go about doing that. So does anyone know how to become a freelance writer. Is it required that you have a degree in English or journalism? My degrees are in science but looking to leave the field.
