I moved from Chicago to San Diego, best choice of my life!
While it offers the best weather in the country, the most opportunity, a totally safe environment and a huge variety of attractions - as a result, despite other comparable costs - it has a downright expensive cost of housing! Median house value has more than doubled since attached 2000 listing, a single room rents for $600/month (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/roo/)
However, if you manage to finish your education, get a decent job from many available, and become established - you will never regret it! (BTW, I still love - to visit - Chicago)

I have lived in San Diego for most of my life (born and raised here, have left many times but keep coming back).

The weather here is the best in the country, if not the world. Crime is very low for a large city. Despite the proximity to Mexico, there isn't nearly as bad an alien here than in other cities, like LA. AND, we have the 2007 Super Bowl Champions, the San Diego Chargers! :-) Okay, the last sentence may be a bit optomistic.

The only down side, and it's a big one, is the cost of housing. However, rent isn't that ridiculous. I own a house now, and am actually thinking of renting it out, then myself renting another house to get closer to the beach (I'm about 15 miles away from it now).

We've got shopping (several huge venues), night life (Gaslamp quarter), tourist traps (zoo, Sea World), and restaurants (Mr. A's, Donovans, Croce's, even Mortons). Pack your bags!

The cost of living is higher there, more expensive property and apartments, risk of earthquakes, and longer travel times for going anywhere else in the country. California also has many ridiculous laws that we don't deal with here in the midwest.

On the other hand, the weather is hot (if you like it that way it's a good thing), you are closer to beaches and the ocean, there are lots of job opportunities, lots of things to do for entertainment.

the chance of earth quake is less here than in San Francisco or Los Angeles, usually when we do it originated in one of those cities so we barely feel them. We are close to the beach and mountains, and also close to the Mexican border (fun for little day trips)
the food in san diego is great,
the cons are bad, 3rd highest cost of living, plus you ll miss the hot dogs in Chicago.

I agree with most- weather is awesome, beaches are beautiful, activities are great, great art scene here, GREAT restaurants, great lifestyle, have the ocean ,desert, and mountains all nearby, etc.

Cons are cost of living, earthquakes arent so bad although we do feel them, FIRES are a risk here, and minor mud issues for some, people can be a little flaky (i.e. they come and go) but very friendly, Santa Ana winds if you have allergies

Overall, if you can afford it, its a great place to be...
