The Valley of The Kings,(Wadi Biban el-Moluk) is located on the West Bank of Luxor.
The ferry , a motor boat or felluca will take you across the Nile, where you will find the village of Gezira.
My favorite way is the ferry. For only 1L.E.and a memorable 7minutes crossing the Nile, its hard to beat.
From Gezira,it is about 2.5 kilometres to the entrance of the Valley.
You can hire a push bike in Gezira at an hourly or day rate,or you can catch up with the "Donkey Man"as he is referred to. He will rent you a donkey and escort you to the entrance of the valley. Arrangements of rates, waitng time etc. are open to bargaining, settle the price before you get on the donkey. You can alternately arrange to be picked up by a driver. For a good driver and airconditioned mini van you will pay about 50L.E.a tip will be expected as well.A taxi with no a/c will only be around 5L.E. for the same service.
You will pay an entrance fee of 70L.E.and for a student or child 35 L.E., This will get you into 3 tombs. The prices went up last September,by 10L.E..
A lot of the tombs are presently under restoration. An increasing amount are now semi or permanantly closed to the public.Special permission can be obtained, but needs to be applied for in advance.
The tomb of Tutankhamun, is not included in the 3 tombs that your ticket covers. It requires a seperate ticket. Which is available at a booth near the entrance. As a tomb you may find it a bit disappointing, as there is little wall decoration and it is very small. Tutankhamun is still insitu in his tomb ,this being really its only drawcard.
The mummy was considered to fragile to move and a glass case was built around and over it.
The Vally of the Kings is dominated by a natural pyramid,el-Qurn,or "Meretsenger" (lover of silence).
The valley is also naturally protected by a narrow entrance way and high, in places very steep cliffs. When the valley was still being used and regarded as a very sacred place, guards were strategicly placed on the top of these cliffs to keep watch for intruders with ill intent.
Almost all the tombs were looted in ancient and early medievial times.
It is thought there may be a few remaining tombs or caches, awaiting discovery, but almost all the rulers from the 18th and 19th and early 20th Dynasty, who used the valley as a burial place have been accounted for.
I would strongly suggest you stock up on bottled water before going, as you will pay up to 3 times the normal price at The Valley of The Kings.
The mementos etc. are also very expensive there. So wait and go to Luxor souk.
It is a wonderful experience but, it should be undertaken as early in the day as possible as the temperature in the valley in Summer last July reached 55C.This is just 2C above average.
When you do go you will have a treasured memory for all your life.

Location :

The secret Valley of the Kings is located on the West bank of the River Nile at Luxor. It is situated 25 Km from Luxor train station.

Why was it built?

It was used for burial, there are many kings buried in this valley. Moreover, the shapes of the tombs have been changed from pyramids style to the cut rock tombs in the mountain.

Explanation:

The Valley of the Kings actually has two sections, the East Valley and the West Valley. The East Valley ,in which most of the tombs of the New Kingdom Pharaohs can be found, is one of the most places visited by tourists. It consists of 62 tombs, which were arranged at first according to their dates of discovery, but after that they were geographically arranged.

The most known tombs are King Tutmosis I, Tutmosis III, Tut-Ankh-Amon, King Ramssess VI , King Mrenptah and AmonhotepII. The tomb of Tut-Ankh-Amun is famous as it was the only tomb found intact as it evidently had remained hidden until its discovery in 1922.

The Valley of the Kings is in Luxor. Used to be called Thebes. Have to cross the Nile on the city side and go to the opposite village. It is best to have hired a guide before you leave Luxor. The Valley of the Queens is also there.
