I guess that it's common knowledge that fax over IP is not very reliable. However, I keep reading suggestions about changing the codec to 711u. What does that mean? How would I do that on a Brother MFC-7820n?

Sunrocket has an article on their fax service- check the link below. The choosing of a codec seems to be automatic- chosen by the VoIP provider, and there is nothing you can do to change it.

While it is true that Sunrocket's fax service is spotty-it is free which is cheaper than vonage. I personally use a scan to fax service- Trustfax, and I am very happy with it. I pay per fax, and I don't pay any monthly fees.
