Ever experienced constipation?
Start off and at first, not too bad, but something isn't right. The longer you go without relief the worse your performance. Things just don't go right, things smell, got no get-up-and-go left.
It is kinda like that when a car's cat melts down. When yo first start, it MAY seem kinda o.k. but you can't really put your finger on the problem. But the longer you drive it, and the warmer it gets, the less willing it seems to go anywhere, particularly very fast or with much of a load.
You can check it out with a vacuum gauge on the intake manifold pretty easily.
If you would like to know how, E-mail me and I will tell you how.
Good Luck and Merry Christmas

Loss of power, engine surges and occasionally it may even back fire through the intake. Put a vacuum guage on the intake manifold and crack the throttle up to about 2500 rpm's and hold it steady - the vacuum should initially drop quickly when the throttle is opened and then climb to 15-18" Hg and hold steady. If it slowly drops while holding the throttle steady, the exhaust is more than likely restricted.

One thing you might notice would be a rotten egg smell, car running rough and stalling out. Thats two things I know of and sometimes if they are clogged really bad they won't start at all.

on most newer cars, you would have a Service Engine or Check Engine light on.
the gas mileage may drop, the power output may lessen, you may notice more rotten egg odor than before.
