get him stuff for his dorm room... microwave, refrigerator, etc.
more than half the guys i know don't care what they wear, don't play video games and already have ipods, but very few of them have stuff for their dorms already.
plus gift cards/money are like saying, "hey, i couldn't bother to put the time in to think about what to get you"

Depends on what he like obviously. Video games, get one for his system. Favorite tv show, get a box set. If anything, get a Best Buy or local electronic store gift card

They are usually never happy with anything you get them so cash or a gift card will most likely do. However, if he has a car I would get him a gas card. I am sure he would really appreciate the fill ups.
