I work for a Microtel Inn and the owner just sold the Hotel. The ppl at the head corp. office tryed to keep us in the dark, but we knew what was going on. Now, with these new owners coming in, probably this week, they are more than likely going to fire us. I heard that I wouldnt be able to draw unemplyment because the old owners didn't FIRE u, so they are not resposible, and the new owners didn't HIRE u so they arent responsible either. That really sucks if it's true. I can't affored not to have a job, I've got a 2 month old and a family to support! Does anyone know how unemployment works, I live in Oklahoma by the way.

No that is not true. As long as you paid taxes and maid enough money to claim you will get unemployment from who ever does the firing.

If you get fired that means you worked somewhere. They have it in there system and you will get your money.

Anyone buying a business "buys" these liabilities* as well. You can sign up for unemployment if they fire you. Be careful though. sometimes there are offers for you to voluntarily end your job and then you do not usually qualify. Be sure you know by calling the unemployment people and asking should such an offer be made.

* Sometimes businesses sell all their assets to someone leaving only cash (presumably) and liabilities. Usually this is when there are complicated liabilities or liabilities of a... shaky... nature that the buyer wants no part of. In this case though, you are then still the original company's employee and when they fire you, there is no question about being eligible for unemployment.

I live in NJ and the way it works is you have to claim all the employers you have worked for in the last 18 months. The amount of money you receive is a percentage of the income you have earned. There is a cap to the amount you can receive each week. (each state is different) Log on to:

Oklahoma.htm you can even apply on-line Good Luck!
