Yes. Despite the general overindulgence in alcohol, it is a time for the living to bond and comfort each other. Often there are many loving stories told about the 'departed' friend or relative; sometimes hilarious stories that one cannot help but laugh at. The laughter helps to heal the grieving heart.
I think they are a wonderful tradition and I sincerely hope when I die my family and friends will have a great party in my honor. I certainly will no longer be feeling any pain, so why should they?

an Irish wake is a celebration of a persons life and all the fun and laughter is to cheer up the family of the person who died to make the loss a little bearable at the time.

My gram was irish, and to be honest, all the imported relatives kicking it up was a bit more than I and my cousin could bear. That and they kept asking it I was someone who say 20 plus years older than I--some of them had never met any of us. I got the car keys from my da and away we went.
I suspect it was fun, but if unaccustomed to the overall myrth and laughter, it is rather an odd thing to behold just after a gram's funeral.
