Use distributive property:
3x-5y+8x+14y
3x+8x-5y+14y
11x+9y

First: get rid of parenthesis > distribute -(-8x) into 8x because two negatives become a positive:

= 3x - 5y + 8x + 14y

Second: combine like terms > x-variables together and y-variables together:

= 3x + 8x - 5y + 14y
= 11x + 9y

= 3x - 5y + 8x + 14y
= 3x + 8x - 5y + 14y
= (3+8)x + (-5+14)y
= 11x + 9y.
