It is assumed you are the problem and get called on the carpet. In actuality the boss is not hearing about all the crap the person reporting you dishes out because you are not interested in keeping score and being a tattle tale. How does one protect themselves from that type of person?

oh i hate office politics and dynamics. this is difficult. the only thing you can do in that situation if fight fire with fire. i'm exactly like you hate to get caught up in that, but you need to stand up for yourself. eventually that person will be found out or move on -- in the meantime do what you can to make their life unbearable in the office. but dont get caught in the process.

You are there to work, not to make friends or enemies. Just keep to yourself and do what you are supposed to. Eventually, the supervisors will get tired of the brown nosers and will find a way to get rid of them sooner or later.

Let your work do the talking. If your boss is any good he'll want to hear your side of it before doing anythin.
