The problem is that Liberals are trying to churn out robots who don't know how to spell, read or add. This is turn causes people to not think and subsequently rely on the aforementioned Liberals for entitlements so they can "survive". I must agree that it is a sorry state of affairs that most people do not know how to spell or write. This goes for all people and not just us Americans. Also, I personally do not use spell check or grammar check since both are very fallible. I have typed in an incorrectly spelled word to see if the check would correct it. Well, it corrected the word to a correct spelling but not in the proper way it was supposed to be used. I find spell check to be highly unreliable.

I was born in the UK, raised in Canada and travel to the US frequently. I really think the bad spelling has to do with the age of the kids on here rather than their skill level. Many of these questions are coming from children. The adults that cannot spell the majority do not seem to have English as a first language.

I am Italian. English is my second language, so bear with me. I am far more concerned with how education helps students develop their critical faculty or reasoning. The dummying down is so pervasive, spelling may be just a minor negative symptom, possibly not just here in the US, but worldwide.
I would imagine that once an elementary student has learned to read, write and compute, the main concern of a good education should be to develop his or her ability to think. But where in a curriculum do teachers learn and apply logic?
Some private schools are beginning to realize that the future success of their students depends on how the students are being helped in decision-making processes, so that they may develop their academic strength in those subjects that will best prepare them to be enthusiastic, competent and ultimately successful in life. There is nothing more depressing than going through school, year after year, and spend so much time doing required, but useless, assignments in which one is not the least interested. That alone is enough to degrade the ducational system.

The American education system in and of itself isn't that bad. Having lived in South Korea for the past 7 years and teaching at a high school in Seoul, I can honestly say, I prefer America's education over Korea or Japan (which are based on the same principles). With that said, the major problem with American education is the teachers union. Here is a link for a 20/20 news reel. http://abcnews.go.com/2020/Stossel/story?id=1500338

Well if we cared more about it we would, but most of the time people get the point of what was said so it is not to big of a deal. Schools here are not the best , but it is the parents fault for not doing anything to educate there children.

Has nothing to do with our education system....has everything to do with people trying to do it faster and not checking their spelling.
Must be the British haven't figured out how to use apostrophes!

It is not due to poor schooling. It is lack of time. I hate spell check it's very irritating to me. However schooling here is excellent.

The problem is that the American education system is now run by the communists who are intent on making everyone as stupid as possible while being sure they all respect each others feelings. I blame it all on them and political correctness
