The air mail stamp that was printed with the plane upside down (a Jenny). That's worth some big bucks but there arr a bunch of fakes out there so watch out. One of the fakes recently surfaced in South Florida (big surprise there) on a mail-in ballot.

Most rare stamps are those that were printed in very small quantities, either because they were from a country that didn't need many stamps or because they were error stamps, and the mistake was only made on a few of them. Just being old does not make a stamp rare. You can buy stamps from the 1880s for a few cents each. But if a stamp was printed in moderate quantities but is in great demand for some reason (usually the subject), it may be scarce. Stamps printed in enormous quantites (U. S. flag stamps, Elvis, Princess Diana, etc) will never be rare.
The rarest stamps are ones that have only survived as a single copy, such as the British Giuana One Cent Magenta. The upside-down airplane stamp is scarce (there were only 100 of them known to have existed) but can be purchased if you have enough money.
Stamp collecting is a great hobby - give it a try!

Rare stamp are old ones, ones that had only a certain number printed, and 'errors' stamps that were printed wrong-upside down or backwards.
there are magazines, papers, and books devoted to stamps-they can be extremely dry and boring, but if that's your thing, go for it.
