The light should fall on the computer screen - that is, should come from behind you. White light should be better. If you are a frequent user, hope you would have fixed an anti-glare screen. Some spectacle glasses for those using computer for long hours is also available and you can check up with the optician.
An advice appearing in a monthly family journal also advised to keep the level of screen slighlty below your eye level.

Make sure whatever light you use is incandescent (as opposed to flourescent), as it has full spectrum light.

Use soft light, coming from the side. Close the drapes in your room. Decrease the brightness of your monitor. The colors won't be as bright, but it's better on your eyes.

Also, be sure you're not too close to the monitor.

Look away from the monitor every 15 minutes and focus on something far away. Give your eyes a chance to relax before you begin work again.

Check out the Bates method. It has some great eye exercises. I used them when I had a job as a transcriber, which required me to stare at the screen for seven hours a day. They really helped!

I'm not sure room lighting is the problem, hon. There are mesh type things you can get to put in front of your screen to reduce the glare, ask at a computer store.
Plus there's always the option of not sitting in front of your PC all day.
