Hello.
Your question is very interesting to me because years ago I did a sort of study on Atlantis. In fact my mind goes in many different directions when thinking about these types of subjects. I read several books about the subject, one of which is called "Atlantis, the Eighth Continent", I think the author's name was Charles Berlitz, probably out of print by now, it's been some twenty years since I read it and the book is since long gone from me. This book gives lots of "circumstantial" evidence in favor of the theory that about 10,000 years ago, Atlantis was large a continent in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere between Africa and North America.
I also seem to remember a reference, possible in one of Plato's accounts of Atlantis's location as being "beyond the Pillars of Hercules" IE, (Beyond the Straits of Gibraltar) somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. That, it was somehow connected with ancesters of people currently living on the Canari Islands just west of Africa and the West Indes (Bermuda Triangle area) just north of the Carribean Sea. I've also read many references on the subject and listened for many hours to a pastor on Satellite TV named Dr. Gene Scott, a brilliant biblical teacher from Glendale, California, now deceased as he taught on the theory. His web sight is still up there (www.drgenescott.org) there is a book store connected with the sight named Dolores Press where you may be able to buy books on the subject, possibly even the one mentioned above.
Be that as it may, as far as I know, there is no proof positive that the Island, possibly even a continent called Atlantis ever existed. From what I know about the subject, I believe that if Atlantis ever did exist, I'd have to go with the theory that it was located in the Atlantic Ocean. But, who knows? it's sort of like subjects like UFO's and ailens who may have who visited Earth eons ago and posssibly shared knowledge with men who were here. It's like the Loch Ness Monster, the Abominable Snow Man, Paranormal events, Giant Squids that are capable of pulling down large ships. People over the centuries, up to today gave and are still giving all kinds of accounts of sightings of such things and events. Am I going to be so arogent as to say such things never existed, or happened? I don't think so, not as long as nobody's proven such things never happened, or do not exist. But then, I can't prove they do exist. Here's a case in point similar to the Atlantis question.
Around 70 AD a volcano exploded across the bay from Naples, Italy. It quickly buried two fourshing cities under tens of feet of scalding ash and molten rock leaving no traces of their previous existance. At the same time, almost instantly the history of the experience of that terrible day was frozen in time, awaiting it's discovery: Pompi, and Herculineum remained buried with only legends keeping the tale of their grandure alive for the next 17 & 1/2 centuries. Then one day, someone found the remains of a wall on the foot hills of Mount Vesuvius and the rest is history. By the way, Herculineum was 21 miles away from the explosion, yet suffered the same fate.
Who knows? Did Atlantis ever exist and what is a legend anyhow? A legend is a story with an element of history attached. Meanwhile until Atlantis is found, if it ever is, interested individuals like you and me are going to tickle our imaginations with interesting tid bits about the subject, as we come across them from time to time. You know, magazines in Dr.'s offices, waiting rooms of businesses, the internet, National Geographic and all kinds of other places.

There are several places lying under the sea that are believed to possibly be Atlantis. The fact that Plato wrote about it should be enough fact.

the only firsthand source of Atlantis comes from Plato's Timaeus, the place he relatively states it particularly is a hypothetical city. All different writings approximately it in historic situations have been refrences back to his e book, and it wasn't taken heavily as a real area till modern situations. it is not a real place.

We actually have proof that it DIDN'T. Plato was the first person ever to refer to it, and he was speaking allegorically at the time. One is supposed to take metaphorical lessons from his writings, not history lessons.
That said, there were islands around Greece that were wiped off the face of the planet. Thera was one such place; although it is not alone in having that distinction.

Lots of spiritual people have talked about it. Edgar Cayce gave some in depth readings of former lives that lived there.
