How can I save a .gif file so that it is animated when I place it into something?

So far, all I get is a saved picture.

this depends on what program you are using to creat your GIF. If you are using Adobe Imagready you will want to hit
FILE:Save Optimised As
Make sure you have set your frames and tested your animation.
If you are using Flash make sure you check your publish settings and set them to GIF

You don't save as you have to save optimise as, this is for image ready I don't know if other programs are like this.
