On the economy? Does anyone else understand that the this isn't just about potecting the livelyhood of the wealthy? When the economy suffers, in the end its not the rich that do the most suffering. Are you willing to put the hundreds of thousands of hourly workers on the street because you think CO2 might be causing animals to migrate north?

Have you ever complained about high gas prices? Do you not realize what people are suggesting will not only put gas prices through the roof, but electriciy and heating prices as well?

It's not about the rich guy, he'll be fine. It's about the average american that won't be able to afford to drive or keep warm.

As an engineer I can tell you, economic solutions to these problems are not going to happen in the near future. There are very real economic reasons why these miracle cars and power sources you hear about aren't being used.

pctorab (sp?): I'm trying to show you how many real economic consequences there are. Maybe it's because you are spoiled that you don't understand what an economic slow down will mean for the poor in this country. They will do more than "pay high gas prices." They will lose their homes. They will go without food. Water would become more expensive just because it would be more expensive to pump and maintain. When you tax or block energy supplies EVERYTHING is effected including the basics. The war in iraq does none of these things.

Global warming has more consequences than animals migrating north. It is a very serious problem, and it is selfish to complain about gas prices and the economy when this problem has the potential to cause serious damage to the earth. If you're worried about wasting money, they why don't you complain about our spending on the war in Iraq and our tax cuts t which both wasted money for political reasons?

dont you think that if energy prices go up, that will be incentive for consumer goods to be more efficient? and that the new technology may even create more jobs?

"economic solutions to these problems are not going to happen in the near future"

bullshit. making things more efficient will not drastically hurt the economy. So what if everybody had to drive a car that got 30-40mpg instead of a hummer that gets 8mpg? whoa what a hardship, people sure will suffer. im not just talking cars either, many other things could be made more efficient as well- like installing geothermal heating for homes. those types of things are drastically expensive and what cause an economic shut down. they may even create new jobs, and more money would stay in the american economy and less would go to the middle east

economic answers to these problems will not come as long as there is more profit in maintaining the present system than in spending the money to make it better!! In many cases, at least some of the steps we can take to fight global warming result in a savings for both the companies and the consumers.as many state governors and some 360 city mayors have found when they did impliment energy saving programs.
Just one example, Millbrae, California found that using discarded restaurant grease in a water treatment plant reduced carbon dioxide emissions by some 1.2 million pounds anually at a savings of $366,000.
by simply switching to compact flourescent light bulbs, walmart found that there will be a savings of 3 billion dollars in electric costs for consumers and 20 metric tons of greenhouse gases each year that won't enter the atmosphere and they have a compaign to sell 100 million bulbs by the end of 2007. both of these things will have a positive rather than negative effect upon our economy, and there are many more examples.
Engineers, by and large, are hired by a company with more interest in profit than in striking out into new areas and it is often scientists who discover the innovations necessary to fight greenhouse gases without adversly affecting our economy.
we have not learned what had been taught by american Indians for years, "we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children"

My name is Rafael Lomena. I write from Alicante (Spain). I am independent investigator on the Accelerated Global Heating and want to share with all something that can turn out from interest to fight this phenomenon.
I believe that the main cause of the Accelerated Global Heating is in the great and increasing forest fires that are whipping to the planet in the last years.
My complete report is in: http://inicia.es/de/rlv/clim.htm
If they do not understand the Spanish they can use the automatic translator that will find in the main page of site:

Why sweat the details? It will ruin our economy and put us under the yoke of countries like China that can pollute as much as they want and offset any reduction we make. The big thing is all these non-developed countries that don't produce as much pollution as they are allowed (because they consider pounding rocks together to be technology) get "pollution credits" they can sell to nations that produce more than their limit, so it's another foreign aid program that is forced on a country like the US, bypassing our own government. "Globalism" is good they tell us.
