A typical french person would be Celion Dion. Yes, I find some french people very cold, especially if you travel to Montreal. But the French in Quebec City are especially nice. Now the French in Paris are extremely rude and make fun of anyone trying to speak French. I find the French in my home town expect everyone to speak French even though it is an English city.
I am also part French.

Everyone has their days! All of the French people I have met have been friendly and warm, which is probably because I am. We get what we give, and when we give a bad first impression we are met with coldness and unfriendliness in any situation right?

Absolutely Not!
I've been to Paris pre 9/1 and post 9/11 and I found the French people to be incredibly nice and warm. Yes there are the snotty ones (mostly waiters) but they do not out number the nice ones.
If you are nice to them, they are nice to you. Their culture is so different from ours so if you keep that in mind, you'll have no problem. As for speaking French, they appreciate you trying (they are incredibly proud of their language) but hate when you don't try and get upset they do not speak English.
As long as you don't act like a "loud mouth American" who complains about the language or food, you'll do fine.

Some are. Some Canadian people are cold and unfriendly too. It would be unfair to pin a generalization like that on an entire country of people.

I am French, but I don't consider myself cold. However, culturally, it is how you approach us. If you act like one of those "USAUSAWERENUMBERONEKILLTERRORIST" sort of Americans, guess what? were going to act cold. If you are an American who realizes that your country is not the best one in the world, that the war in Iraq was a complete mess, and that it is people's actions who dictate who they are, not their nationalities, were going to act alot nicer. The thing is that americans do not make fun of the US and its people. A good chunk of french comedy is making fun of France and its people. If Americans can learn to make fun of themselves and laught, the US and France would get alot much better.

I suppose if people were looking for that of personality in a nationality of people, they would probably find them. Of course, our perception would be altered depending upon the positive or negative mindest of the observer. Thus, we can only conclude that the question is based primarily on biased generalizations that do not necessarily reflect the truth.

Only to foreigners who go to their country without making any effort to learn French, yet expecting the French to be fluent in their language.

No. But their culture is different than ours so Americans often perceive them to be so. I've traveled in Europe a lot and found Europeans in general to be very polite and helpful but more formal than Americans, many of whom can be loud, demanding and rude when traveling abroad.

I guess some of them can be.
I've met a few french people and they've all been good people.
I guess it all just depends on the person.
Besides, it cant JUST be the french...people here are just as cold and unforgiving.
