Pretty much the same advantages to rivers all over the world:

Irrigation
Transportation
Food source
Important part of food chain
Control of run-off from rainforest (in SA)
Habitat (including banks of the river)
Water storage
Source of hydro-electric power
Drinking water for major cities.....

We'd be stuffed without them, basically.

The same as the benefits of the rivers anywhere else. They're the drainage system, returning rainfall back to the sea. In doing so they support huge ecosystems, including the largest rain forest on earth (or what's left of it). They also provide vital transportatiion routes in countries with few roads. The people who live along the rivers depend on them to make a living by fishing etc. The Amazon basin is the most diverse ecosystem on the planet, containing more species of plants and animals than anywhere else. It is also beng destroyed at the rate of 45 acres per hour, 7 days a week.
