I am an R.N. with 30 years experience with newborns. You have gotten some good advice, and some very poor advice. This is very common. Wash your hands well before touching the eye and again after. Clean it with a clean washcloth and warm water. Lightly massage the inner corner of the eye 4 or 5 times with your finger tip. If the drainage is moderate, white or pale color, it is probably a blocked tear duct. If the drainage is a large amount and is dark yellow or green it is more likely an infection and should be seen by the doctor. Of course, the wisest thing is to call the pdeiatrician's office in the morning. Speak to the nurse there and she can tell you if you need to bring the baby in. And NEVER use cotton balls in your baby's eyes.

Baby Goopy Eye

Sounds like a blocked tear duct, in which case the Dr. will tell you to leave it alone, or at the most, put a warm compress on it to clear the goop. If the eye is red or pink, then an infection may be present, then you'll get some antibiotics. But if it's just runny and goopy and then crusty in the morning, then it's nothing to worry about, though it looks bad. My baby had a blocked duct until he was 4 months, then it just went away. Good luck! :)

I agree with wiping her eyes with a warm washcloth. Just be sure to do it correctly. With each wipe, you should start on the inside and wipe away from her nose. Going the other way could clog up her tear ducts. Every time you wipe, you should use a different, clean section of cloth. Do not rinse, wring out, and use again. That just puts the bacteria back into her eye.
At bathtime, you should never use soap of any kind on a baby's face. Using plain water on a clean cloth is good enough. Also, be sure to keep the rinse water off her face when you rinse her hair. This will also help lessen any eye irritation.
Good luck to you and Blessings!

I would make an appointment with a Doctor ASAP.

Until then I would gently with one wipe away wash from the tear duct with a clean sterilized cloth- Each eye. I don't suggest using any ointments unless you doctor says so.

You use a new cloth or wipe / one for each eye . It helps the bacteria from spreading.

I would do this very gently twice maybe three times a day.

And once a day as part of the daily routine care after it clears up.

My son had this as soon as he was brought home from the hospital. I thought it could be anything from pink eye to allergies to some type of eye infection I didnt know about... I called the nurse and after I explained everything she said it was probably a blocked tear duct. She said to keep cleaning it, and it sometimes takes months to work itself out, but it's not serious and it will work intself out. Clean with: clean hands, warm wet washcloth. wipe off eye boogies. you can press on the nose, near the eye (side of the nose, not bridge) and sort of massage towards the eye, that could make some of the discharge come out. just keep doing that. The Dr. precribed an antibiotic drop that you use AS NEEDED. he's 5 wks now and his eye boogies are gone! but it really was an every day thing up until about two days ago.

Take a clean wash cloth and rinse it thoroughly (to remove any residual detergent that could be in it from the washer). Get it warm with very warm water (but not so warm that it burns her), wring it out, and wipe the corner of her eye *gently*. This could be something as simple as a clogged tear duct, or it could be (God forbid) pink eye. I don't know how a 2 week old would have gotten pink eye, but you never know.

my baby girl had a goopy eye too. I put a little breast milk on it and it cleared right up. Breast milk is pretty amazing stuff, they should bottle it...hahaha get it? bottle it? haha
I got a million of `em!

anyways, yeah go with breastmilk, don't waste your money or time going to the docs and remember that if you choose regular tap water it's full of bacteria that are good and bad and might make the goop worse.
it'll go away.
