I've been on the net since 1991.
Anyone remember Gopher? Archie? Veronica? DOS-based newsgroup readers? FTPing files from the command line? Fingering a server and not getting busted for hacking? Trumpet Winsock?
If so, you're a net veteran.
Anyone who says they've been on the "web" prior to about 1993 is largely FOS. The first widely released HTTP spec (1.0) was released in May 1996 and was quickly followed with version 1.1 (the current fully supported spec) a month later. That was the birth of the World Wide Web -- browser-based net surfing. Prior to that, you were on "the net" or "the internet" but it wasn't user friendly for the neophyte. The earliest version (0.9) was published in 1991 but was read-only (no PUT, HEAD or DELETE commands) and only allowed single sessions per client IP. It was pretty cudgy to say the least. I remember messing around with it using NCSA Mosaic on a Windows 3.1 box around 1994 or so. Couldn't have been more than a few dozen websites back then.

early to mid 90s, thats when the dot com craze started. ppl started putting all their money into dot com stocks. you can pretty much look up any major website like aol.com amazon.com yahoo.com and many many many others, you can see they all started from early to mid 90s.
anything before that, it was company restricted websites. there wasn't much on the internet at the time. there wasn't much for the public to find.
