If you are really reading the play, you should know who they are. Act I, scence ii introduces them. The Mechanicals are a group of common workmen who are putting on a play (within the play) for Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding which takes place in four days. They add much humor to the play by mispronouncing words and overexaggerating, especially the character Bottom who wants to play every part.

Good luck!

The "rude mechanicals" are the lower class characters who prepare "Pyrramus and Thisbe" for the Duke and Duchess. Bottom, Snout, Snug, Peter Quince, Starveling and Flute.

I'm actually doing the play right now, and the mechanicals are just kinda the side characters. They go along with the actors.

They are the laborers of the town, people who do physical work. They are less educated and less refined than the main characters, and are funny because they mispronounce the words of the play they are putting on, "Pyramus and Thisbe."
