My ex is a jerk and my hubby went by their house and dropped a letter in their mail box to let them know of our upcoming plans for the holiday and we just received a call from the county sherriffs dept. that my ex wants to make a report that my hubby tampered with his mail box and that it is a federal offense (I know that tampering with mail is). But seroiusly how much trouble can you get into for dropping off a letter in someones mail box? The content is not in dispute, there was nothing in the letter that would cause alarm or concern, just an informative letter on the holiday schedual. But what could be in store for us?

we were just trying to keep him informed and we could not mail it to them for it to get there in time for the holidays. he 'misses' calls, 'doesn't get' emails we send, and "forgets" that he says things and we were just trying to make sure that he had all the information that he needed, since were are sharing the holiday.

Sounds like your ex is a jerk. To make trouble for you and your husband your ex can file charges against your husband and it is a federal offense. I would contact a lawyer. Very serious a judge may see what he is doing and throw it out but you never know. Good Luck

Your ex would have to prove that your hubby was the one tampering with his mailbox. does he have the concrete evidence? No? Then you are not in trouble. :)
I would suggest that all communications - be it a holiday schedule or not, be sent to your ex (if it's really necessary) via registered mail or an attorney. If there's anyone tampering with his mail box, he would have to ask the mail man! lol
Another thing he may accuse you or your hubby is - "harrassment" or what he may call as "unwanted attention". I would suggest you not to communicate with your ex unless it is of utmost importance, for example, if it concerns your ex's kids.

Okay, I should really stop being like a lot of other ppl on here and actually read through the ENTIRE ?
Do u live in Redneckville, USA? Sounds like it, or a major ghetto. Everything exes do is illegal so stick it to him.
Ur ex needs to do some time in the clink, and u and ur hubby need to go underground for a while.
Good job leavin his ****, tho. Give props to ya.

Definitely! Mail fraud is a FEDERAL crime - meaning that you don't just get local policemen after you, but agents from the FBI! It's a hugely big deal! You're not allowed to do ANYTHING with anyone else's mail without their consent (spouses can open each other's mail if they have a good relationship of course). Hope this helps!

Technically it was a misdemeanor (although "tampering" was not done and the sheriff should understand that), but I cannot imagine any law officer carrying such an obvious domestic tiff much further than just the questioning call you had. Just checked with my friend, a policeman, who said he'd tell the husband to cool down and get real and not to bother the dept. with that sort of ----.

Given your user name, I think you know what this simple act of convenience can be spun into. Since, there is a custody issue and this is a major holiday season; it isn't taking much to set your ex-husband off.
Give yourselves and him a "cooling-off" period.

misdemeaner.......u will probably have to pay a fine for doing this.
U both can work this out, but next time mail the letter and let the mailman deliver it.

I don't know the answer to your question. But I do know I would hire an attorney if there seemed to be trouble looming over this.

Talk to your officer.
But, honey, couldn't you have just mailed it? No big deal. I wouldn't worry to to much about it =]
