Some religious slave owners and other racist of the day believed that the Black race was a scorge and that to be black was a sin.
This was the farthest thing from the truth.
Black slaves had a strong sense of community and a strong sense of God. Believing in God was the strength that these slaves held on to for one day being freemen. They kept their faith.
As a result the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was founded.

alos, being stripped of everything they ever knew, including their names, religion became the only way for them to be a community, a family.
