most stores will not let you exchange them for cash- if it is a credit type gift card (which most of them are these days ) you don't get cash back in change- they just deduct your purchase from the card

some gift cards can be used to purchase a small inexpensive item and then you will receive your change back in cash- this is a rare thing now as stores want to hold on to the sales and the money as tightly as they can.

I don't know if I should be saying this- I DONT recommend this as a habit but IF you REALLY don't want to shop at that store, and you cannot get someone to buy the card from you or make a trade- you could use the card to purchase something at the store and then return it for cash- as long as you have the receipt, you should be able ot make the return for cash- if oyu dont have the receipt you will most likely get store credit. I would first try sellgin the card to someone who would shop there anyway.

In a day when most people have everything they need and most of the things they want, gift cards are great. All you have to do is find a store they love or a store you would want to introduce them to and gift them. Dont feel the pressure to put tons of money on it, a present (including a gift card) says "I was thinking about you," not I'll sponsor your dreams. Happy holidays

Sell it on Ebay!!! That is what I do when gift cards aren't the perfect fit. You probably won't get $25 bucks but like the guy in the previous post offered...you can probably get $20.

Generally, the store will give you the cost of the gift card back after you buy something. all stores insist you buy something , even a chocolate bar or pack of gum.

I've never heard of any. They usually have it printed right on them (or the card they come on) that they can't be handed in for cash.

I think they're nice to give someone if you have some idea of where a person would like to shop (or eat or get gas or whatever).

Your question about cash makes me wonder if there's someone you know who you'd like to give a card to but you're concerned they'll try to get cash for it. If, by any chance, this is the case there is something to consider: If a person is so seriously without cash that he/she is likely to try to trade in a gift card, you may want to just give that person cash (maybe, though, in the form of an attractive check rather than in "green money" cash).

I know cash isn't a very pretty gift to give, but for people who have serious money problems it can be the best gift you could give. Some people believe they don't want to give cash because someone will buy groceries or cigarettes or spend the money on someone else (like their children) and not end up with "something that lasts" or " something special". I think, though, if you're dealing with a person who is in serious financial trouble that person may be more worried about getting up the cash for a phone bill or even a package of cigarettes that will help him/her "stay sane" in spite of the bad situation than he/she will be worried about getting some nice little luxury for him/herself.

So my opinion about gift cards is this: If the person is living a normal life, they're very nice to give (although I still kind of favor selecting a special gift to give someone rather than a card). If the person has serious money problems, a gift card may be nice but cash for food, bills, or whatever else the person needs cash for it the most respectful and thoughtful gift.

I've known people who buy gift cards "to make sure" the recipient shops at a certain store and uses the card to buy "something special". In other words, they take it upon themselves to decide what they believe is best for the recipient. What is always best for the recipient of any gift (whether the giver likes or understands the recipient's needs/choices or not) is to give what will help the recipient the most. "Making sure" a person gets "something special" rather than spending cash on things he needs desperately means the giver doesn't respect the recipient to know what is best for him/herself.

In a way, too, gift cards kind of create an inconvenience to the recipient because it means he/she has to worry about using the card before a store may go out of business or before something else happens. The person who is confined to needing to find something in one particular store may find there isn't anything he/she really wants and may end up getting "whatever" just to get rid of the card.

While gift cards may show that the giver wants very much for the recipient to get something he/she wants, they can also kind of make the giver look like he/she is taking the least inconvenient route to gift-giving - so there's something a little unappealing about them in that way too.

Finally, there's something kind of childish-feeling about bringing a gift card to the store and looking for that "something special" that the giver didn't trust himself to find for you. Remember when you were - like - six, and some aunt would give you a few dollars in a birthday card? Remember how you'd think and think about how to spend it, and then get the trip to the store to actually act on your decision? I somehow feel a little like that with a gift card - and I don't mean in a good way.
