There is some good information at http://mydarksecret.com/HowToWrite/HowTo.html

It's mostly around the dinner party script sort of mystery, but has some good hints there.

They are also about to roll out a Collaborative Murder Mystery Script tool, so different people can contribute characters to a script. Pretty cool.

I would start with the young man playing his melancholy flute by the water when he sees a body floating. The 53yr old woman can be the coroner interviewing him about the girl - when he sees the body out of the water he realizes it is his music teacher. Hope this gets your imagination going!

Seeing old Ms. Wittingford, at her mature age of 53, you wouldn't expect her to have ever done a sinful thing in her life. However, old Eliza Wittingford had some dark secrets, secrets which, if exposed, could debase her whole life and reputation.

(make it a kind of suspense that she killed the 17 yr. old man...maybe he was her illegitimate son, maybe he raped her daughter, maybe she's insane.)

Once upon a time.... start it by turning your brain on and doing it yourself. In addition to spelling, grammar and creative use of words, that's what the assignment is all about. Doing it yourself.
