Here's what Jakob Dylan from The Wallflowers has to say about it: "I tend to write with a lot of metaphors and images, so people take them literally. The song's meaning is all in the first verse. It's about the death of ideas. The first verse says, 'The death of the long broken arm of human law.' At times, it seems like there should be a code among human beings that is about respect and appreciation. I wasn't feeling like there was much support outside the group putting together the record. In the chorus, it says, 'C'mon try a little.' I didn't need everything to get through, I could still get through -- meaning 'one headlight."

I luv that song. I sorta feel like okay, you know your friend is falling apart...you're so close but yet you can do nothing!! Like the headlight on your car....2 partners in the life of a car, the other light has gone out, and theres nothing you can do about it. And when that car starts up! you have to keep rolling along..w/ the other headlight or not. The journey is difficult but there are forces that you can't control. And you have to keep on doing what you are supposed to do in this life. And you wish you could have saved that light because w/out it soon you will burn out too!! And who's going to save you!!

personally, i think he's talking about the death of somebody he really loved and him trying to cope with it and make it without the other person (without the other headlight, "one headlight") My best friend died when i was younger and i guess thats kinda how i took it, especially the part that says "i think her death, it must be killing me."
