I have been dancing for eleven years
i know you should have your feet propped up when stretching your splits, but don't know what is safe and what is harmful,
i am in a class that is below my level this year so i don't get much help in dance class.
Thanks and Merry Christmas

Staright kicks is not only a matter of flexibility but also a matter of muscle strength. You need to have strong thighs and abs in order to have good kicks. Try doing your kicks in "slow motion" - that is very hard but I can't imagine it being harmful, that will build your muscles.
Merry Christmas to you too.

Try over splitting! Find a step, put one leg on the step and flex your foot, then split your legs, doing forward splits. So your leg thats infront of you will be raised on the step therefore oversplitting. It might help your kicks

doing an over-split is not harmful and will make your sodeshas a whole lot prettier. also, it sounds like the muscles in your legs aren't strong enough for you to have an ideal amout of contrl over your leg. try weight lifting!
