I think for most people they are a nice escape from reality---rich people who don't really work, have nice clothes, get to sleep around without all the consequences, are good looking and all that stuff----plus it is a story line to follow----i never started watching them until i met my fiance and he watches them with his mother----she craves the drama and he just watched then with her because he is a mama's boy with no life----the one they watch is The Young and the Restless and i kinda follow it, but not every single day, i mean its not like if i miss a day i go insane and ask everyone what happened, but 1 or 2 times a week because personally, I don't really enjoy them.

Soap operas are popular because of their story lines and their characters. People watch them because they like them and they are great entertainment.

I do not watch but one soap opera-and do not know why it is so popular with me. I have been watching it for 50 years.

Because 4 the most part their story lines are based on life n community issues made entertaining n more dramatic 4 ratings natch n 4 those who dont think they know everything they can be fun education 4 communication skills & romanc inspiring. When was the last time u welcomed ur laidy home with a candel light dinner n massage!

Because humans have this odd tendency to love minding each other's business. That's what the whole soap opera thing is about.
That the people are not "real" is irrelevant - they are "real enough" (maybe I should say realistic enough ) to be convincing.

people like fantasy so they can escape their lives. Soaps also parallel some people's dramatic lives....or the viewers think they do so they relate to them. Some soaps are just fun to watch, where else can you see two grown women pull each others hair and wrestle in the mud? besides porn and wwe. personally they are not for me, i prefer reality TV, half scripted drama with bit and pieces of reality.

I watch them sometimes because they are, for me anyway, a break from reality and I really hate it when people just dismiss soaps as 'for stupid people'. I am a bilingual graduate so I'm really not stupid but when you're tired after work, it's nice to relax for half an hour with some mindless distraction.

Most of them took of because the wasn't anything else on tv back in the day of 3 networks. I hate them, but have watched some of the spanish ones.

cuz they have interesting dramatic plots...not! i like to make fun of the characters bcuz they're either really bad actors that are over dramatic or they do funny dumb things. at least on the soaps that i watch.
