it really depends on what he likes, music lover? concert tickets. artsy fartsy? get him some art supplies or something.
also here's something that never fails for me, clothing and accessories from Urban Outfitters.
OR anything from Best Buy and the like. Electronics baby!

You already have some wonderful ideas!! How about going through all the old photo albums and making your music cd's go with some photos? You might also check out some yardsales and look for something you can re-paint / restore and re-gift it !!

Get him:
1. an ipod (duh)
2. a belt (find out his waist size)
3. a bottle of brandy
4. a dvd of his favorite movie.

the new playstation (assuming you can find one as most places are sold out), an electric razor, or something for his car/truck if he is into that, or some CD's----CD's work for anyone especially if it is something they want, but make sure they like/want it tho, cause not everyone likes every kind of music!
