Before I read the "driver's ed" thing, my instinctual response was to tell you to do like we do in Chicago and ride that person's *** till they change lane.
However, since you are just learning, and you need to stay safe, just slow down and wait until it's safe to pass the person.

Call the attention of the driver in front of you by blowing your horn, if you get no reaction, then let it go forward a distance of about 3 cars length; look in the rear mirror to be sure you have clearance behind you (turn your head to see over your shoulder, look ahead for the incoming traffic; then accelerate and pass it on the left, never on the right. Do not look at the driver, and most importantly be courteous. The driver might be an old person.

good question.. I drive a slow vehicle , it is called a PETERBILT 379, 18 WHEELER. Please remember the following, big trucks accelerate slow, turn slow brake slow and maneuver slow. the only thing that happens fast are the decisions made behind the wheel.. did u know that our economy depends on the trucking industry.. so give us a break and be patient, use your turn signals, don't race up to the right of a truck when he or she is preparing to turn right, give them room, don't pass in a hurry, don't linger next to a big truck, learn about the NO ZONES around a truck and stay out of these areas. be familiar with your states laws pertaining to trucks, like californis restricting trucks to the right lane. this is so dangerous. the most used lane on the road is the right lane. so be aware of these rules and you will be fine.. remember be patient, leave 10 minutes early and be safe.
