I am doing a thesis on heart of darkness and I need to have a syllogism for it. I decided that I'd write about how imperialism has caused Africa to be in the state it is now. The problem is that I don't think imperialism is the right word. is there a word for invading a dominating countries and taking and used the land and ruling over the people the way you want? Thanks

imperialism is the right word
invasion doesn't quite tell the story
occupation doesn't tell the story either
imperialism tells the listener/reader the nature of the invasion or occupation and the attitude of the attackers

Tyranny or dictatorship.

The word I'm really thinking of eludes me at the moment.

"In the case of many African or Asian former colonies, after achieving their independence in the postwar wave of decolonization, presidential regimes were gradually transformed into personal dictatorships. These regimes often proved unstable, with the personalization of power in the hands of the dictator and his associates, making the political system uncertain."

The problem in Africa has to do with muslim extremism!

The Darfur conflict is an ongoing armed conflict in the Darfur region of western Sudan, mainly between the Janjaweed, a militia group recruited from the tribes of the Abbala (camel-herding Arabs), and the non-Baggara people (mostly land-tilling tribes) of the region. The Sudanese government, while publicly denying that it supports the Janjaweed, has provided arms and assistance and has participated in joint attacks with the group, systematically targeting the Fur, Zaghawa, and Massaleit ethnic groups in Darfur. The conflict began in July 2003. Unlike in the Second Sudanese Civil War, which was fought between the primarily Muslim north and Christian and Animist south, in Darfur most of the residents are Muslim, as are the Janjaweed
