do I need to purchase some type of special double layer disk?

You need to use DL Disks to do that.

You need to use dvd-r/dl and let me tell you the cost for five disc's a around $25 So i never use them.The nero program that came with the burner requires them or the dvd+rw and them too are exspensive .I use a outlaw program to get around them,only way i could get cheaper disc to play in my dl burner.If you get a burner make sure it isnt a dl they are a pain in your pocket book.

u need to but a DL in other words known as Daul Layer DVD only. only DL DVD will work
