I am English and live in Vietnam, the family next door and sometimes the one oppisite regularaly beat there children, especialy the girls.I am not talking about a slap, but bruising and sometimes blood.I have asked my Vietnamese freinds is there anyone i can report it to,they say no,this is normal behaviour in Vietnam and i should close my doors and ignore it.I find this hard to do,also if i tackle them while they are beating the child i would probably come off worse.Any ideas please.

This is a difficult predicament that you have found yourself in. If you are not Vietnamese and a British citizen or any other English speaking Nationality, what I would reccomend to you is contact your embassy, your government, international newspapers. Contact your friends, family get people stirred up. Put pressure on your government. Call the UN. Peter Mansbridge from the Canadian Broadcast Corporation would be a good news contact.
Although Vietnam itself has no child protection laws, I know that the International laws do exist to protect children. I wish that I could tell you more specific contacts, however I will speak to my local government as well in hopes to bring awareness to this situation.
Another really good place to start is Amnesty International-Canada

At the bottom of the page is an email, If nothing else they can advise you better than anyone here.
Good luck! It takes a big person to sit up and notice abuse, and an even bigger person to do something about it!

I commend you for your concern, however, you are a foreigner. While Vietnam may not have child abuse laws, they may have something for you if you decide to tackle your neighbor. Perhaps you can try talking to your neighbor? I'm sure you must be familiar with their customs and beliefs. Try a peaceful approach and try to come at an educational angle rather than tackling. I would not get your hopes up. You will most likley be seen as the outsider and told to mind your business. You can try reporting something to the police, if not child abuse, try a noise complaint. Either way, you may be able to prevent at least a few beatings. I hope you figure something out. Good Luck

This makes me so mad! Mistreating a child is not and should never be permissible anywhere! I would try to do something, but since I don't know about Vietnamese rules, I really can't say what to do, but I wish there was a way you could tell on the parents! Do what you feel is the best thing you can do...whatever happens, never regret fighting for the innocent!

I would report this to your local authorities right away. The children didnt ask to be brought into this world and the do not deserve to be beaten.you can make this call and not give your name. This way here you wont have to worry about your neighbors knowing who it is.Please dont let these kids go thru another day being beat.

Definitely don't ignore it. Alert authorities or a child protection service.
