The name Hockey was originally used just for the Ice variety... then they started calling something they do on grass hockey too... soooo depending where you are in the world they are called different things...
Canada and other hockey loving places "Hockey" is on ice and Field or Grass hockey is not...
England and other sad places where they play things like Cricket and don't get much ice sport "Hockey" is played on grass and "Ice Hockey" is on ice

Field hockey came first; it was played in a field/on grass with a stick and a ball, pretty much the same concept of the game. Ice Hockey came next with skates and was invented in Canada

Hockey...
There are many conflicting theories on when and where the game of hockey started but for all accounts the game evolved out the Irish field game called Hurley. Hurley is played year round in Ireland on a field with a ball and stick...

Ice hockey as we know it is first played in either Windsor, Nova Scotia, Kingston, Ontario or Montreal, Quebec, depending on who you believe and how you read the evidence. It was developed by a bunch of english soldiers wanting to play normal hockey
