I doubt if you can do it that quickly, even if you have your photos ready and verified by the gardai. If you go early and bring proof (airline tickets or booking reservation) showing date of travel, they may speed things up for you, but are still likely to ask you to come back and collect it next day. If you are coming from somewhere outside Dublin, all that extra travel will be a pain. It would have been better to think ahead and not try to skip the queue. This time of year the passport office is always extra busy.

I can't see how you would be able to retrieve your old passport. If they have partially processed your application, then they may have also cancelled your current passport in readiness to issue a new passport. So as you say I think it's down to queueing and hoping they can find your application and process it for you on the day.
