We have a 1/2 acre partially wooded lot. We have approxmately 30 huge trees and nothing grows in the wooded area except for weeds. The rest of the time it is bare earth. Any thoughts on a good shade-loving ground cover? I'd prefer no Ivy. Our neighbors have Ivy and it's out of control.

I have a path going through my wooded area and I planted vinca, which is a ground cover and blooms tiny purple flowers in spring and fall. Also an assortment of Hosta's, Bleeding hearts, lily of the valley, and an assortment of ferns. There are alot of shade loving plants, of course check to make sure they are in your zone. Have fun! A garden in the trees looks very pretty.

Vinca is a good vining ground cover. Also ajuga. Vinca blooms with a small blue flower and ajuga has a bloom , but it is not desirable. Honeysuckle is a ground cover, but it will get out of hand very rapidly. Also you need to consider your area. In the south, any ground cover is a harbor for snakes. Especially in the woods. You may want to consider planting some daffodils in amongst the ground cover for a beautiful spring display. Naturalize them, scattered random in the trees. It is beautiful!

Hosta lillies are always great around trees and thrive in shade. Then there is bleeding hearts, huchera, these are all perennials, not groundcovers perse, but they are nice. If you insist on a groundcover, there is a blue or bright green moss that you can order through mosr catalog companies that is gorgeous! And it makes an absolutely beautiful groundcover!

There are lots of ground covers that will survive and thrive. Euonymus, Bishop's Weed, lilies of the valley (love those) moneywort, etc..
We live in a heavily wooded area and one thing you might take into consideration is snakes. They do love those ground covers.
Good luck!
