No, I don't think it was racist. There are a lot more harmful shows out there than Friends. If a TV show has only one ethnicity on it that doesn't make it racist. As for others being ostracized, I think that is a little extreme. Groups of close friends can be tough to become a part of, but the show was about the six of them not other people.

........ I think you're a bit sensitive. I'm Asian, and I don't find it racist at all. Racism in my estimation is defined by actual acts of racism or slurs or obvious and HATEFUL shunning. And even if they didn't have that many characters besides the "white people," they did not exclude others. Therefore, it's not racist... and if they "make fun" of others, they're just kidding. It's not meant to be taken in a serious manner just like the ENTIRE SHOW is not meant to be taken in a serious manner. Do not confuse a generalization with racism because generalizations are not necessarily racist. It's like saying... "Asians are smart." Well, that's not always true, but people say it, and it's not exactly that offensive! I like to be viewed as intelligent. *shrugs* The show is just ENTERTAINMENT. That's that. Unless they outright say a slur, I think all the "targeting" of minority groups they do is not really offensive, bigoted, or racist.
Besides, people tend to mesh better with others of their own race, ethnicity, and/or background. My friends are, for the most part, ASIAN! That doesn't mean that we can't get along with others because we do. It just means that we have the most in common, and therefore, we make better friends.

"Friends" should be called "Frons", because whoever writes the scripts obviously damaged this part of their brain. To quote Mercksource.com,
"Generally, damage to the frontal lobes causes loss of the ability to solve problems and to plan and initiate actions, such as crossing the street or answering a complex question."
Personally, I think this sums up the plot and story structure of most Friend's episodes. Generally any other characters introduced in the show, if not cameo star appearances to boost ratings, are ridiculed or exaggerated so as to make the attractive, preppy, entertaining Friends appear even more attractive, preppy, and entertaining.
On the other hand, as a marketing vehicle to promote and endorse designer clothing, and a social and intellectual lifestyle choice that a small number of Americans can afford, it has been extremely successful.
All hail the flying spaghetti monster!

I was ok with it until Season 10.
At least they didn't say it out loud before that until episode 10 of the 10th season, Monica and Chandler talk of leaving the city. Phoebe reinforces negative Asian stereotypes with her racist response: "Have you thought about what you would be giving up? You can't move out of the city, what if you want Chinese food at 5am? Or a fake Rolex that breaks as soon as it rains or an Asian hooker sent right to your door?"
For some Asian viewers here that think the show is ok, think again. Or grab the disc that has the above episode and watch it.
Don't get me wrong, I love Friends. I bought every season of it, even books about them... But sometimes, enough is enough. They just didn't know the limit.

I dont think you need to put a black guy or gal in show for no reason, there supposed to be wealthy jewish people in there 30's that are educated and came from wealthy families they dont hangout with blacks or poor whites like me either, and on that subject why is racist cause theres no blacks there were very few latinos and asians and middle eastern people for that matter and you didnt say anything about that in this world there are a lot more races than white and black and secondly check out black shows they rarely have whites on and when they are on they are portrayed as uncoordinated, wimpy, have no common sense, are stuck up, and just plain lame and thats way worse.

That's a stretch calling the most bigoted, racist program ever made.
Look back into the 1950s and you'll find some bigoted programming that makes FRIENDS look like The Cosby Show.

How many white characters on "Bernie Mac"?
Ever see a black person on "Gilmore Girls?"
How many Hispanic characters on "Reba"?
Black OR Hispanic on "Seinfeld?"
"Friends" is/was no More guilty than any other show. It focused almost exclusively on the lives of the five young "friends" who rarely introduced ANY outside characters into the mix. Most of the ancillary characters were mom's, dads, uncles and such.
Please. The show is over. its dead. No reason to dig up the corpse to ignite some new wave of race hate.

i wouldn't say it was racist. then again you look at other sitcoms with predominately white characters in them, eg seinfeld, frasier, cheers, will and grace and there are sitcoms with black characters in them, the cosby show, fresh prince of bel air, different world, in da house, hangin' with mr cooper to name and they hardly featured white characters. its very rare to find a black or asian character in a sitcom and as much you and others would say its racist, at least know that regardless of the stereotypes they play, at least they play a role in the show, one way or another. friends on the other hand, was one of the most overrated sitcoms ever. it was funny during the first 5 seasons at least but afterwards, the humour was gone and it became predicatable, boring and overhyped. it shouldn't have even lasted 10 seasons- as 8 would've done the francise justice.

I don't know about bigoted, but it sure was unrealistic. It also left many questions unanswered. How did they afford those apartments? How did Joey avoid venereal disease? How messed up are Ross's children going to end up? Why wasn't that show cancelled two years before it was?
