Hi, I bought my son an electric guitar for christmas and have been really enjoying playing with it when he is not around.
I am now thinking that i would like to try and learn how to play guitar.
Would it be best to buy an acoustic and take some lessons? or should i just buy an electric(which i would prefer) and try to find a good beginner book?
Electric/ Acoustic?
Lessons/Book?
thanks
shawn

I had the same question when I started but I went opposite of what everyone said I started on an electric It is a lot funnier to play that's for sure :) on the same side of the coin you start to have serious limits on speed and how you finger so I went out and bought an acoustic wow I play on that maybe 2-3 hours a weak and it really helps speed and fingering. You will get a little less out of starting on an electric but i don't really like the sound of and acoustic so If you don't like the sound of something you won't play. I can't help you on the the lessons/book question cause I don't try to learn other peoples songs. I learned a few chords and stuff but I think the biggest influence to me was minor pentatonic scale. Also I use a pick so alternate picking was a big influence on my style of playing. alternate picking means that instead of picking in all downs or ups you alternate. up,down,up,down,up,etc. Like strumming up and down but on one string. Well good luck and play with your heart.

The electric is easier. That is why I recommend learning on an acoustic, it is a little harder and because of that it will keep you from picking up bad habits. It's easier to play an acoustic and pick up an electric than the opposite. Whichever you choose, take lessons. I tried to learn from a book at 15 and gave up. I pulled it back out at 30 and took lessons. I'm not great, but can play a tune or two. Good luck.

Start on an acoustic. There a lot rougher on the fretting hand so when you play an electric later it's a lot easier. I started play acoustic for 5 months then when I got my electric I couldn't believe the difference in how good I could play....

It doesn't really matter. there isn't too much difference between an electric and an acoustic, but I think since your son has an electric, you should get an acoustic
don't get a cheap one or it won't be worth it
there are some things you can do on each, but you should get an acoustic

Get whichever guitar you prefer and I would suggest that you get private lessons. I'm taking lessons right now and it's so much easier than trying to figure out a book!

I've played for about 25 years and I say learn on accoustic because it will force the discipline you need from your fingers in a way you can't get from your electric.

Take lessons because you'll get personal attention and the teacher will give you a good book.

Start with acoustic, and get lessons, unless you already have base knowledge, then just get books.
