its a law that was passed 10 yrs ago when a bus full of kids was hit in cary, il. 7 killed. location is now known as 7 angels crossing. so to answer ur question it is to listen and look for a train.

ALL of the answers here r correct. But the BEST response is that they r listening for the trains. The speed of a train in sight is impossible to tell by a layperson..so sound is extremely important too!

It's a Federal law that requires them to stop at all non-exempt grade crossings and look AND listen for any trains. Vehicles carrying hazardous materials are required to do the same.

it's the law. The driver has to look down the tracks to make sure no train is coming.

It is a regulation to make sure that there is no way for them to miss a train coming from the passenger side. They are required by law to do it in most places.

since most bus doors are split and have a fairly wide center beam, the drivers are required to open them to be able to see clearly down the tracks.

It's the rules and they apparently have to stop to listen if the train is coming. Weird huh?

the bus drivers are supposed to listen for trains coming. it's a law.
