A gene codes for a protein. This is the general rule for a gene linkage with protein. So, it does code for a polypeptide.

A gene consist of many different amino acid codons. After transcription and splicing, the mRNA goes into the ribosome to be translated into a long chain of polypeptide.

Remember that a gene is made up of a long sequence of DNA.
