Look under the sink - there should be a curved piece of pipe between where the pipe comes down out of the sink, and where the drain goes into the wall or the floor. That curve is called a trap - it holds a bit of water to keep smelly sewer gases from coming into the house. It also catches small things like earrings.

You need a big wrench or pair of pliers to remove the trap. There should be 2 rings, one on each end, that screw onto the trap to hold it in place. put a bucket or pan under the trap, loosen the rings with the pliers, and watch for the water to drain out when you take the trap off. With a little luck, your earring will either fall out then, or else drop out of the trap.

If it's still in the drain under the sink, but above the trap, try wiggling the pull rod that moves the stopper up and down. If it still doesn't come out, try poking it with a pencil or something thin, to knock it loose. Your last step will be to loosen or remove the stopper. There should be a fitting on the back of the drain pipe that unscrews to let this happen.

First, you can try to lift out the stopper. Under the sink, you can loosen the stopper it by unscrewing the nut that holds the wire piece that pushes the stopper up and down. You will probably need a pair of pliers to loosen the nut. Pull out the nut and wire, then the stopper should lift straight up when you pull on it.

If that doesn't work, you may need to unscrew the pipe underneath. You may need a pipe wrench or a wide set of pliers to loosen the pipes if they are metal. Sinks have a U- or P-shaped piece of pipe directly underneath which should catch the earring. Place a bucket under the pipe, loosen the nuts holding the curved pipe, and let everything fall into the bucket. The earring should end up in the bucket (along with a bunch of gross hair and gunk).

Put a bucket under the drain pipe under the sink where it changes direction. This part of the pipe is called the trap. Newer traps have a clean out cap along the bottom. The older pipes you have to disconnect the whole elbow. Then shake or poke everything into the bucket and then put it back together. make sure it's water tight. You might have to use some Teflon tape. I once found a white gold engagement ring in a old house. Good luck=o)

There is a "U" shaped trap under the drain, if it falls in...as long as you don't run any water down, it will be in the bottom of that U shaped pipe.
The fittings that hold it on are not hard to take off...it's designed to be removed easily. Just pay attention to the washers and things. If the nuts don't move easy, turn the other way...depending on the fittings, the way they turn can be a bit confusing if you don't drop earrings down the drain much!

automotive store.. either the telescoping rod with the magnet on the end or the 3 finger picker er upper... lol i dont know the name but its spring loaded.. you push one end and the three fingers come out (like the crane game) they retract back into the tube which causes the fingers to grab.. very useful tool

Depending on what the earring is made of, you can try tying a magnet onto a string and trying to get it that way.

Put used chewing gum on the end of a stick or a wire and try to fish it out.

unscrew the u bend in the pipe (make sure to have a dish under to catch any water in the pipe) and get it out that way. or use a piece of wire with a hook in the end to hook it up (a coathanger usually does the trick)
good luck!
