it can last forever (since no hard drive), but the battery can be an issue.

They usually last for as long as you want. That is, if you keep it safe and don't break it, then it will last forever. It doesn't self-destruct. However, I think the battery-life is less than the regular ipod but the price is a good benefit. The battery lasts 12 hours before it must be recharged. I don't really think it will break though if you're careful.

Don't get a shuffle. Spend a little more and get one with a display screen, so you can see what you're doing. Durability shouldn't be a big issue with the smaller ipods that use flash memory. The only thing you should be worried about is battery life, since you can't change the battery yourself.

i wud recomend not getting a shuffle... if u r looking for sumthin cheap and long-lasting go for the nano... they will last forever if u treat them good enuff and they have more space to store ur songs and they have a screen on them so u can choose what song to play... but if u really want the shuffle then u shud get it... the only drawback is no screen so u cant choose what song to play and the battery doesnt last long (like 4-5 hours i think)
