I've heard it said, but can anyone prove that the metaphysical thinking is what caused it?

Sure, you can definitely think your way into craziness. But this of course depends on your defintion of 'crazy.' I know some diagnosed schizophrenics who act like perfectly normal and incredibly kind, great people on their meds. If you were never told they were schizo, you could have never figured it out for yourself. Are they technically still "crazy"?

And, no, you couldn't prove that your craziness resulted solely from thought. Obviously, you would have to get inside somebody's head to do so, which not even doctors can do. Which also begs the question of whether psychiatry is such a "science" as we all think; how accurate can mental ilness diagnoses ever theoretically be? One's brain works in ways another person could never imagine.

I think you have proposed a form of dualism. You can not think you way to crazy if your thoughts, instantiated in your brain, are deficient. This sounds a bit like the correction the behaviorist made to cognitive theory. When the cognitivist posited that all our problems were from cognitively distorted thought, the behaviorist pointed out that the underlying brain mechanism could also be distorted in many cases.

If you think of a skeptic arguement closely and let it sink in you can become parinod. However That may be much different than a physical disease that causes one to become crazy. Crazy is sort of defined by a sickness in your brain so that it does not operate like that of a normal human.

I must say though that listening to Descartes bring into doubt your very existance except that only you can think and exisit is something if you continually think about can cause some parinoid behavior on what you know

when you repeatedly train the chemicals and pathways in your brain to react a certain way, these thought patterns really do take over. It is not so extreme to do this, phobias are psychotic issues and other obsessive compulsive or irrational traits. You can train your mind into health as well by combating negative thoughts (or thoughts that reoccur that are unhealthy) If you first admit they don't work for you and then be diligent to take them captive every time they arise.I live by this and so does everyone else. Except when you are conscious of the mechanism you are in control of it and subtle , subconscious influences are no longer stronger.

First we have to define "crazy", because many times it means that someone is socially incompatible with the rest of the status quo. But yes, I believe that if someone spends too much time inside their head then they can go crazy, so to speak. Look at many great artists such as Hunter S. Thompson or Ernest Hemingway (first two to come to mind). I believe that they thought so much the only way to quite the voices in their heads was to kill themselves, or "go crazy".

Thinking. hmm...that is everything that goes on in your head. it encompasses your emotions about something, OCD, recalling an event that bothers you, etc. An actual event may not drive you crazy, but having your mistakes stuck in your head may do so.
I think i could easily go crazy from thinking. or anyone who is not mentally stable, who is stressed, in bad times. Sometimes it does have to do with the brain, phsyical things explained by science or medicine. but sometimes it is just one's own thoughts. i have experienced this. it is a terrible thing. the mind is fragile.

Yes it is possible to think your way into craziness. Sometimes people need to think about not thinking too much.

Sure it is possible. The mind is very powerful.
The question then would be........WHY would anyone want to think their way in to being crazy?
Would you like to volenteer to be the experiment?

No - in order to go crazy you need a certain emotional and genetic predisposition and probably a lot of stress.

If thinking causes craziness, then we need more crazy people. "We're Never Gonna Survive, Unless We Get A Little Bit Crazy...." -SEAL
