I read that he could speak in many dialects and that he was actually Canadian. Is that true?

He truly was Canadian and landed the part of "Scotty" in Star Trek when he did his "Edinburgh" accent for his tryout. Otherwise, he had virtually no accent.

I believe that is true. I know he didn't really have that Scottish brogue.
