I just found out that I am pregnant - after 7 months of trying! YAY! This is my first child, so of course, I have questions! I have not been to the doc yet - I can't get in until Jan 5th, but I took 2 hpt's and they were both positive, plus my period is like clockwork (every 28 days on the nose) and it's late, plus my husband and I had been using ovulation kits and were "active" when I ovulated.....so......

For those of you that have kids, what tests did the doc do on the first visit? (If you remember!) Is an ultrasound done a while before a sonogram? What's the difference?

How long did you wait before you told family? Friends? Coworkers/boss?

Thanks!

on my first visit to the doctors they did a pap. and asked questions about family history, also went for blood work to make sure i was pregnant, and the doctor felt my belly and measured it, ultrasounds are usally about 26 weeks unless you have some problems and they use them to , to see when the babys due date will be if you are not sure of your last period, and later on you will go for blood work and a diabetic check where you have to drink this stuff that tastes like flat orange pop and come back in an hour or so to have you blood taken again, and you will probably have other blood test s done,, this is what i had done anyway.. good luck and congradulations!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just had my first baby 6 and half months ago so I remember a little bit. On my first visit they did another pregnancy test to confirm prenancy. (Ask can you keep the test. It's a great keepsake!) They also do an ultrasound so that they can determine how far along you are and determine your due date. They give you important information on how to eat and what activities are good for you. Also you should be started on some prenatal vitamins.
I waited until I was three months before I told anyone. It's all up to you when you let anyone know. Maybe it's best to go in stages and break the news to the most important people first. If you want let the news spread because believe me it will whether you want it to or not.
Have fun because it is a fun experience. There are some hard times but in the end when you see your beautiful child you will see that it was all worth it.
Congratulations!!!!

congrats first of all! a new baby is a beautiful thing. i have two! and i would never want to not have children after having them. I remember the doc doing a pregnancy test, but as far as tests, i think that was the only one they did that day. the ultra sound and sonogram i think the sonogram is the one with sound, but i can't remember for sure. I know the ultrasound is the one where you look on a screen to see the baby's heart beat and later you might be able to see what you are having if you want

Congradulations!!! I told everyone with the first within an hour, lol. I told everyone about the baby I am now carrying within 2 weeks. I tell friends and family first, then co workers. It just slips out when you are excited.

A sonogram and an ultrasound are the same thing. Some people get two. One at 8 weeks and one after 18 weeks. I am not high risk, so my babies only get one at 18 weeks or later...

I go to the doctor right away. they will wiegh you, maybe feel inside you. take a pap smear, urine and blood.

Congradulations! I am 13 1/2 weeks

doc's gonna put you in stirrups and ram her hand up your uterus and check for it manually. relax and it shouldn't hurt as much!

they'll weigh you, check your blood pressure, ask you when your last period was, and determine your maternity date.

they'll give you vitamins, and if you're 35+ they'll schedule an amnio (but you don't actually have to do it, just a precaution, although be advised a lot of women have been known to miscarry after an amnio).

it's best to wait until your second trimester to tell friends and family you're expecting. anything can go wrong (don't worry though!). since 2nd trimester is considered the safe period, you should feel free to tell people then.

you shouldn't have to tell your boss until you start showing, and that won't be until your 4th month or so.

if you work around chemicals, or xrays, or hazardous materials, i suggest you quit your job to protect your fetus! or at least avoid coming in contact w/ anything that is considered dangerous during early pregnancy.

all in all, this is a joyous occasion, so do yourself a favor and tell only those people who REALLY need to know, like your closest family.

congrats and good luck! (by the way, you should visit the many websites out now for expectant mothers, they have lots of tools and resources for pregnant women. useful stuff.)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! Well we told them right away. And the blood test is the best test for the best results, and the sonogram plays babies heartbeat when big enough, Ultra sound is a picture made by sound waves bouncing off the baby. Around 5 or 6 months pregnant though for that one. Sonogram is earliest test. But be ready for the PAP thats for the very first visit.

For your first visit they will confirm your pregnancy with a pee test. Do a pelvic exam, take a history do some blood work and set you up for your first start of prenatl visits at 3months or 12 weeks.
If I was you I would wait to tell people till that 12 week mark. I know it wil be hard but is always a good thing to wait.
By the way Congratulation.

I consider your discomfort. I have had heartburn when you consider that I was once 12 weeks, now I am 36 weeks. I get up just about each night time, a few occasions a night time since it hurts so dangerous, to not point out the discomfort I consider via out the day! And commonly it isn't simply heartburn, slightly throw up will include it! My healthcare professional advised me my handiest choices had been to take maalox or tums. I take the soft dissolve tums, they are now not almost as chalky and just about soften in my mouth. So, I preserve tums far and wide. In my handbag, through my mattress, and in my dwelling room. When I'm handiest having moderate heartburn I attempt to drink a tumbler of milk and commonly to be able to support slightly, I truthfully feel soda makes it worse. I am sorry you're going via this too, a minimum of it is going to give up when we provide beginning! They say keep away from specific meals, however I swear EVERYTHING offers me heartburn!

I am so happy for you... it is great

first visit I had , my Dr took a test a make sure I am pregnant.
a week later i had spotting and I went back to see my Dr, she sent me for ultrasound but baby was too small to see, I went back a week later and I saw my baby for the first time, it is the greatest feeling, her little heart inside you :)
and then I was seeing my Dr every 4 weeks
My Dr asked me to do blood test ( to make sure baby is healthy) I forgot the name of the test, and she told me that this test ( blood one ) has so much false + result and I have to be ready ...
I told her Ok, but i was not ready when my result came back. then I had to do amnio... that was scary... I hated it, but it was not that bad.
and then they told me that baby is fine and it is a girl.
I used to see my Dr each 4 weeks till my 35th week and now on I see her every 2 weeks
by the way I heard my baby's heart beat when I was 16 weeks
and I had my real ultrasound around the same time

Good luck
