I need help with a history essay. This is the question:
The North victory in the Civil War accepted Jefferson's definition of equality used in the Declaration of Independence. The victory also settled the debate on state rights vs. federal authority. Explain the above.
I know my teacher wants the rights denied before the Civil War (for women, blacks, Native Americans, etc), the controversy of the Alien and Sedition Acts, and when rights were prohibited, abused, or used.
Serious answers only, please, and thanks in advance!

Your question has no answer. You will have to ask it again in parts. The Civil War settled it that states have no right to secede. But the Constitution states to this day that all powers not given to the Federal government are retained by the states. We still debate states' rights today. Today's Supreme Court is wrapped up in whether the Federal government can forbid states to legalize marijuana or euthanasia; or whether states can pass laws against abortion even if the Supreme Court says not. The Civil War did not result in votes for women or rights for Native Americans. The Alien & Sedition Acts were declared unconstitutional 60 years before the Civil War.
